Asteroid City, director Wes Anderson’s new film, takes place in the 1950s in a fictional town in the North American desert. Staged as a play, the story follows a convention organized to unite students and parents in an academic competition, until chaos suddenly ensues. Events on a global scale threaten to spectacularly disrupt the Junior Stargazer/Space Cadet convention itinerary in the sleepy town as events unfold that could change the world forever. Asteroid City had its world premiere at the 76th Cannes Film Festival in 2023, where it was up for the Palme d’Or.
