Wicked – For Good
The building of that famous yellow brick road to the Emerald City is going smoothly, but there’s more than meets the eye happening in Oz. Sure, everyone’s worried about the Wicked Witch of the West causing trouble, but get this—she’s not really wicked at all! Her name’s Elphaba, and she just wants to spill the beans about how the Wizard’s been lying. Sadly, Madame Mortimer has already painted her as public enemy number one.
Meanwhile, you’ve got Glinda, who everyone thinks is all-powerful and amazing. Spoiler: she’s not even a real witch! She’s just great at playing pretend and putting on a good show.
“Wicked” dives into this crazy friendship between these two totally different girls—Elphaba and Glinda. They’re as opposite as pink and black but keep watching because things get interesting when they team up to rewrite their own story.
The movie splits into two paths: one tackles these big political themes like propaganda and truth-twisting that were set up in part one; the other follows a sweet romance line between Elphaba and Prince Fiyero. On top of that, Jon M. Chu’s film takes a closer look at how Madame Mortimer spins her tales through newspapers filled with rumors during an intense witch-hunt vibe sweeping across Oz.
In this second chapter of the Wicked story, things get pretty interesting. The whole “Wonderful” thing about Oz is a clever play, right? Even when Oz gets called out for faking it, everyone keeps believing in him. It’s like today’s world where people go with what they believe rather than what’s actually true.
Elphaba has her own take on why she’s the bad guy—she tells Glinda that society needs someone wicked so Glinda can look good. Kind of a wild way to think about it! Then we dive into some fresh backstories for the Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow and explore why certain things happened in the original Oz story, like how Dorothy ended up there in the first place.
This part’s got loads of plot twists and maybe takes itself a bit seriously sometimes. But it’s still fun, much like the first half, with its mix of memorable songs—though not every tune hits the mark equally. One intense line goes, “For the first time I feel wicked,” which is delivered straight-faced but packs a punch. And there’s this romantic moment that totally works—it wraps up the movie with a love story vibe you don’t see in Baum’s books or even the classic MGM film!
So, here’s the scoop. You know how in those classic stories we often get just one side of things? Well, this tale flips the script on that. At first, when we hear about the Wicked Witch of the West biting the dust, we’re all ready to cheer. But then—plot twist—we dive into a whole new perspective. By the end, we’re right back at that celebration scene from before, only now it’s way more complicated than it looked at first glance. The same story suddenly seems… different once you know more about it and see it in a totally new way. Cool, right?
